Columbian Artist Series Returns

PRESS RELEASE - 1/07/08

Buie Featured Artist at Kaw Valley State Bank

The Kaw Valley State Bank would like to welcome back the work of local artist Mararet Buie for the first installment of the 2008 Columbian Artists Series.

Buie has been involved in the visual arts since she was a small child.  She received her bachelors and masters in art education from the University of Kansas.  During her career as an art educator, Buie taught all age groups, with the majority of her teaching at the middle school level in Wamego.  In 1995, she was selected as the Kansas Secondary Art Educator of the year and was honored at the National Art Education Conference.

As an artist, Buie has worked primarily in two media – metal and watercolor.  She paints because she responds to the subject emotionally and it speaks to her.  Inspiration for the major portion of Buie’s work comes from travel.  She’s drawn to the urban scene; therefore, people have become an increasingly important part of her work.

Buie’s collections have been exhibited locally at the Strecker-Nelson gallery and The Manhattan Art Center in Manhattan.  In Wamego, her work has been seen at The Columbian Theatre, Emerald City Market, as well as the Kaw Valley State Bank.

The Kaw Valley State Bank exhibit is free to the public and available during lobby hours until the end of March, 2007.  For more information about the Columbian Artists, contact The Columbian Theatre at 785-456-2029.
